Seizure Pharmacy FAQs
A seizure is defined as an uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain that comes on suddenly and causes changes in your behaviour, movements, feelings, and in levels of consciousness. If you are having a seizure you may experience uncontrollable, rapid shaking that is rhythmic. Your muscles will contract and relax repeatedly.
There are many different types of symptoms of seizures depending on which part of the brain is involved. They could include:
- You experience a short blackout followed by you being confused and unable to remember for a short time
- You have a change in behaviour like picking at your clothing
- You unknowingly begin grunting and snorting
- You drool or foam at the mouth
- You start to twitch, jerk, or your muscles go into spasms out of your control
- Your eyes start to move
- You have a change of mood like a sudden burst of anger, panic, joy, fear, or laughter
- Your whole body shakes
- You taste a bitter or metallic flavour
- You temporarily stop breathing
You may experience some warning symptoms before you get a seizure. For example, you may:
- Feel afraid or anxious
- Experience a spell of vertigo; you will feel like you or your surroundings are spinning or moving
- Feel nauseated
- See flashing bright lights, spots, or wavy lines in front of your eyes
Usually a seizure will last somewhere between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. If your seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, then it is considered a medical emergency.
You could experience a seizure after you’ve had a stroke, a closed head injury, an infection like meningitis, or another type of illness. Often the cause of a seizure is unknown.
Most seizures can be controlled by taking medication, however they still can have a huge impact on your life.
Different seizure medications have different side effects. The type of medication that your healthcare professional will prescribe will depend on the type of seizures you have, the other illnesses you have, and the type of side effects you can tolerate.
Some of the more common side effects include: drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, increased appetite, diarrhea, sleep disorders, vision changes, rash, headaches, depression, vertigo, and blurred vision.
