Diabetes FAQ’s
If you have diabetes, your body can’t produce insulin or can’t properly use the insulin that it produces. Insulin ia a hormone that regulates the amount of sugar (glucose) found in your blood. It is produced by your pancreas and need to be carefully regulated. You need need insulin in your body for energy, however, if you have too much sugar in your blood, it can damage your organs, nerves, and blood vessels.
In Canada, there are about 11 million people who suffer from diabetes or prediabetes. With a number that high, it is likely that you or someone you know is affected by this disease.
Are there different types of diabetes?
Yes. There are four types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, Gestational Diabetes, and Prediabetes.
This type of diabetes is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes. If you have Type 1 diabetes you aren’t able to produce your own insulin so you need to inject insulin or use an insulin pump to make sure that your body has the right amount of insulin. This type of diabetes usually begins in childhood or adolescence, but it can also start when you are an adult.
With Type 2 diabetes, you aren’t able to produce enough insulin or you aren’t able to use the insulin made by your body properly. This type of diabetes can often be managed through healthy eating and regular exercise but you may also need to take medication or insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes usually starts in adulthood but it can also occur in children.
This is a temporary form of diabetes that happens during pregnancy and occurs in about 3 to 20 per cent of pregnancies. If you develop gestational diabetes you increase your risk of you and your baby getting diabetes later in life.
If you have prediabetes, your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be considered Type 2. You may or may not get Type 2 later on.
What are the complications associated with having diabetes?
Diabetes can lead to a number of different complications including:
- Heart attacks and strokes
- Nerve damage
- Kidney disease
- Foot and leg problems
- Retinopathy (eye disease)
- Nerve damage
- Erectile dysfunction
