What is heart disease?

If you have heart disease, that means that your heart is not working properly. Heart disease has many different root causes and it refers to a group of conditions that affect the structure and function of your heart.

It could be a condition that you were born with, which is referred to as congenital heart disease, or it could be something that you develop later on in life.

What causes heart disease?

Heart disease can be caused by both medical conditions or lifestyle choices. Medical conditions that lead to heart disease include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Diabetes
  • Pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy)
  • Sleep apnea

Lifestyle choices that can cause heart disease include:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking excessive alcohol
  • Being overweight
  • Having an unhealthy diet
  • Not being physically active
  • Stress
  • Recreational drug use
  • Birth control or hormone replacement therapy

Are there different types of heart disease?

Yes. There are many different types of heart disease  including:

  • Coronary artery and vascular disease: Coronary artery disease occurs when your arteries become narrowed or blocked and vascular disease happens when you have problems with other blood vessels thus reducing the flow of blood to your heart.
  • Arrhrthmias: This is a heart rhythm disorder that makes your heart beat too slowly, too quickly, or in an uneven rhythm.
  • Structural heart disease: This refers to structural defects or abnormalities with your heart’s structure. You could be born with this or you could develop it later in as a result of an infection, wear and tear, or something else.
  • Heart failure: If your heart gets damaged or weakened you can experience heart failure. The top two causes of heart failure are a heart attack and high blood pressure.

Is heart disease a common problem in Canada?

Yes. About 1 in 12 adults over the age of 20 suffer from heart disease in Canada.

Does heart disease affect men and women differently?

Yes. Men are usually diagnosed with heart disease about 10 years younger than women are with the average male diagnosis coming between the ages of 55-64 and 65-74 for women. Men are also twice as likely to have a heart attack than women.

Are there things that you can do to reduce your risk of heart disease?

Yes. The following factors will reduce your risk of heart disease:

  • Limiting the amount of alcohol consumption

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition where “the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that is may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.”

Your blood pressure is measured by both the amount of blood that your heart is pumping and the resistance from your arteries as your blood flows through them. If your arteries are narrower and your heart is pumping more blood, then your blood pressure will be high.

Are you born with high blood pressure?

Usually high blood pressure develops over a number of years. Almost everyone will eventually have high blood pressure, but once you are diagnosed, you can work with your health care professional to help control it.

What do the numbers of your blood pressure mean?

The first or top number refers to your pressure when your heat beats and the second or bottom number refers to force of blood in your arteries while your heart is relaxed.

A normal adult blood pressure should be lower than 120/80. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 139/89 than you have pre-hypertension meaning that your pressure isn’t as low as it should be but you don’t have high blood pressure yet. If you reading is higher than 140/90 then you have high blood pressure.
